For this 9th edition, 17 artists gather to focus their reflections on a planetary environment undergoing profound change. Their images are intended to represent rights of reply to chaos as a way, first, of denouncing the flaws and bankruptcies of a fragmented present, but also of feeding those breeches with a highly committed and mindful poetry.

Denouncing the lines and faults of chaos

CHAOS denounces the bankruptcies of a present fragmented by conflicts. It reveals the faults that give shape to places and that affect populations, notably through borders, architecture or military zones: Youri Cayron and Romain Rivalan in Palestine; Debi Cornwall at the Guantánamo Bay military detention center; Nadav Kander in Russia and Kazakhstan; or Daniel Schwarz and Andreas Rutkauskas along the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada.

Entering the fragile places of chaos

CHAOS reflects on a planetary environment undergoing profound change. Affecting both towns and nature, chaos operates in a more muted way in jeopardized areas: northern aboriginal territories captured by Elena Perlino and Éli Laliberté; tourism in India, by Martin Parr; accelerated urbanization in Brooklyn studied by Mathilde Forest and Mathieu Gagnon; or in the Gaspé Peninsula, the marks of a long-gone mining operation or a railroad documented by Myriam Gaumond and Martin Becka. Together, they are all revealing of those threats that pervade the landscape and the existence of each one of us today.

Opening the poetic breaches of chaos

Evocative of catastrophe and upheaval, CHAOS intends to be a bearer of forms both committed and poetic: abstract shapes evoke disaster with Fiona Annis; the landscape is destabilized by way of contemporary technologies for Isabelle Gagné or through old-time photographic techniques for François Quévillon and Janie Julien-Fort. These deconstructed and chaotic forms allow for a nourishing of the breeches in a weakened world thanks to a new, resolutely untimely poetry of the image.
